Let The Kids Help Grow Foods That Are Good For Your Teeth

It’s that time of year again.  Time to start planting your own fruits and vegetables.  You know the value of fresh produce for your health as well as the health of your children.  Did you know that there are foods you can grow that are good for your oral health?  Why not take it a step further and get the kids involved?

This way, not only do they get the satisfaction of seeing their seedlings grow into healthy plants, but they also can learn that, in turn, these plants can help them be healthy as well.

Carrots

Carrots are often thought of as a vegetable that are good for the eyes.

They are also excellent for your teeth.  They are a tough vegetable that takes a lot of effort to chew.  A lot of chewing stimulates saliva production.  As the carrot is being broken down, the vegetable is removing plaque from your teeth while saliva washes it all away.

Cucumbers

Similar to carrots, cucumbers have a tough exterior that takes a bit more effort to break down in order to swallow safely.  These vegetables also remove plaque as they are being chewed.

Leafy Greens

Greens such as spinach and kale contain calcium.  Calcium helps keep tooth enamel strong.  Keeping these vegetables as a staple of your diet can also help rebuild eroded enamel by redepositing minerals.

Celery

Celery is another vegetable that is excellent for scrubbing teeth, due to its fibrous nature.  It also contains vitamins A and C, which are excellent for gum health.

Onions

This vegetable is notoriously known for causing your breath to smell bad, but it actually is good for your mouth.  In its raw form, the onion contains an antimicrobial that kills bacteria.

Strawberries

Strawberries contain vitamin C, which helps kill bacteria in your mouth.

Watermelon

This summertime favorite has a high water content, which can help aid in the washing away of any particles or buildup in your mouth.

Items for good oral health don’t always have to come from the drugstore.  In fact, you can a lot of what you need in the produce you eat.  By growing your own fruits and vegetables, you can save money.  By getting your kids involved, you can teach them the value that these fruits and vegetables can have not only on their wallet, but their health as well.
